The Finnish film industry is increasingly looking beyond its borders – and even outside the Nordic region-for co-financing.
Kemppinen becomes Head of Production at Film Foundation
On May 1, Petri Kemppinen, currently Head of International Affairs and Development for the Finnish Film Foundation, will change his title to Head of Production. Kemppinen will continue to develop the international aspects of Finnish films for the Foundation and to represent the Finnish film body at the Council of Europe’s Eurimages. He will report to the Foundation’s managing director, Irina Krohn.
Local market share down 8% in 2009
After three years above 20%, the 2009 domestic market share for Finnish films fell back to the 2005 level of 15%, down 8% on the 23% share in 2008. General admissions also fell by 2.4%, to 6.7 million. Extra €5m in public monies to protect film jobs
The Finnish Minister of Culture and Sport, Stefan Wallin, announced this week that he had awarded €5m more in funding the local film and audiovisual industries, through the Finnish Film Foundation (FFF), to protect jobs and know-how. The extra €5m state grant, part of an overall €400m stimulus package to support the Finnish economy, will be split. 2008 was a year of cumulative gains for Finnish cinema. A total of 19 releases was one of the highest decades. The main reason for this flurry of activity was the availability of production funds that had not been spent in previous years, allowing a larger number of films to be made. With 1.5 million admissions, 2008 was a good year for Finnish films, which upped their local market by 3% to 23%, almost returning to the 2006 level of 24%.
