Slovakia - International Film Guide Survey

23/02/2008 - The Slovak film industry can rightfully regard 2008 as one of the most successful years in the era of an independent Slovak Republic (the last 15 years). And that can be said despite the fact that nearly a half of the 21 projects planned for release in 2008 have been postponed, mostly for financial reasons. In the first and second rounds of the state Audiovisual Grant Programme, AudioVision 2008, chosen projects received only €3,888,236 – almost one-third less than the amount allocated in 2006.
On 1 January 2008, the Audiovisual Law came into force. A more vital provision will be the Audiovisual Fund law, the goal of which is to ensure the continuing support and development of Slovak film production, culture, and industry. The Slovak Parliament passed the law on 5 November 2008.
In spring, Juraj Nvota’s Music (Muzika), a tragicomic story of three musicians in Czechoslovakia during the late 1970s and early 1980s, won nine National Film Awards. Blind Loves (Slepé lásky), the directorial debut of Juraj Lehotsky, was selected for Cannes.
