Animation studios A Film slows down activities
A Film, one of Scandinavia’s most established film studios, has had to lay off six employees and put some projects on hold because of the economic downturn and stronger competition between projects fighting for state funding. “There isn’t much money in Denmark for domestic films and several of our projects have been postponed, again and again. We’ve had to cut our in-house personnel but, hopefully, many of them will still work with us in the future on a freelance basis,” said company CEO...

Admissions up 7% in first half of 2009
Two positive trends were registered during the first half of 2009, according to figures just published by the Danish Film Institute (DFI). On the domestic front, general admissions climbed by 7%, thanks largely to Niels Arden Oplev’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. On the international front, Danish films had a strong presence, winning awards at many top festivals. Recession affects Egmont profits
Scandinavian media giant Egmont announced in its 2008 annual report that its revenue increased by 5%, from €1.49bn in 2007 to €1.56bn last year. To counter the economic trend and sustain the group’s future investments, Egmont launched a cost-saving plan of around €60m in 2008, but even with these precautionary steps, 2009...
Denmark - International Film Guide Survey
2007 was a catastrophic year for the Danish film industry. Even though the 26 Danish feature films released sold somewhere in the region of 3.2 million tickets – securing a market share of 26 per cent, the second-highest share for local films in Europe after France – spiralling production costs and a greater divide between art-house and mainstream releases made it harder to profit from making films. 33% market share for local films in 2008
Thanks to the phenomenal success of the WWII resistance film Flame & Citron, seen by one in seven Danes over the age of 15, the local market share for Danish films reached 33% in 2008, up 7% from 2007. Admissions for Danish films passed the 4.3 million mark, a level not seen since 1976 according to the Danish Film Institute (DFI). With 667,601 admissions, Flame & Citron, produced by Nimbus Film in co-production with Germany’s Wüste Film, was the biggest hit of the year. Another four Danish...
Dogma Mobile connects
Always at the forefront of innovation, Zentropa co-founder Peter Aalbæk Jensen, part of Filmmakers’ Independent Digital Distribution (FIDD) with Lars von Trier, Susanne Bier, Bille August and some 160 European filmmakers, has teamed up with Denmark’s public broadcaster DR and Nokia to create the first Dogma Mobile Film Festival. “With this festival, we want to explore the mobile film genre as an art form in its own right,” said festival director Niels Aalbæk Jensen (brother of Peter). “The...
