Sergei Loznitsa

Sergei Loznitsa was born in Baranovichi, Belarus, in 1964. His family would later move to Kiev, where the young Sergei accomplished secondary education. In 1987 he graduated in maths and engineering from the Kiev Polytechnic Institute. Between 1987 and 1991, he develops his career as a scientist in the Institute of Cybernetics, where he studies complex systems and artificial intelligence in depth. At the same time, he translates from Japanese and starts to be keener on cinema, what led him to taking, in 1991, the State Cinematographic School admission test, in Moscow. He graduated in 1997 and started an attractive career as an essayist of documentaries with titles such as Life, Autumn (1998), Portrait (2002), Blockade (2005) or Northern Light (2008). In 2010 debuted in the fiction field with My Joy, and deals in depth in the genre with In the Fog, FIPRESCI in the Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival.
