- We chat to Luisa Romeo, a producer for Spanish outfit Frida Films, who has been selected to take part in Producers on the Move 2018
Luisa Romeo co-founded Galician production outfit Frida Films in 2009, with the aim of producing quality arthouse films that also had commercial potential and worldwide relevance. Her productions to date have included movies such as the documentary Los increíbles, directed by David Valero, La mujer del Eternauta, a documentary co-produced with Argentina and helmed by Adán Aliaga, and the recent María (and Everybody Else) [+see also:

Romeo has now been selected by European Film Promotion to take part in the Producers on the Move 2018 initiative, which is taking her to the 71st Cannes Film Festival and should enable her to bolster her network of professional contacts and strike up collaborations that could potentially bear fruit at some point in the future. Presently, she is immersed in preparations for the production of various projects, particularly for Tres, the second feature by Juanjo Giménez, which she previously presented during a pitching session at the Co-Production Market at the recent Berlinale.
Cineuropa: What is the film you are most proud of and why?
Luisa Romeo: I’m very satisfied with María (and Everybody Else), as it’s a film directed by, starring and produced by women.
What are the challenges and merits of producing in Spain?
At Frida Films, we produce movies that have a distinct arthouse hallmark; we need to cut down the distance between the Spanish audience and its cinema. The situation is very complex, so I feel lucky to be able to focus on producing talented directors, both male and female.
What are your expectations in Cannes as one of the "Producers on the Move"?
I’m very interested in making contacts and getting to know the projects of the other producers who have been selected.
What are your upcoming projects?
I’m producing Tres, the new movie by Juanjo Giménez, who won the Short Film Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2016 for Timecode, and After by Óliver Laxe, who won in the Critics’ Week with Mimosas [+see also:
