Passion amid Burgos trial in Aranda’s Luna Caliente

by

On April 27, Barcelona-born director Vicente Aranda started the HD shoot for his 24th film, Luna Caliente, to be set in various locations in Madrid, Burgos and Toledo.

The director returns to a genre that has brought him great success, the thriller, with a story that unfolds during the Burgos Trial of 1970, which resulted in the death sentence of three ETA terrorists. Due to its national and international resonance, the trial is considered one of the key moments in the transition from the Francoist dictatorship to democracy.

Passions – one of the recurrent themes in the 82-year-old director’s work – are at the heart of the screenplay, written by Aranda and adapted from Argentinean writer Mempo Giardinelli’s eponymous novel.

The film centres on Juan (played by Eduard Fernández, who recently won Best Actor at the Malaga Spanish Film Festival for his performance in Mar Coll’s debut work Three Days with the Family [+see also:

), an intellectual who returns to his native Burgos and begins to feel an uncontrollable attraction for Ramona (Thaïs Blume), a sensual 16-year-old girl, whom he ends up raping. The cast also includes Emilio Gutiérrez Caba, José Coronado, Mary Carmen Ramírez, Carla Sánchez, Empar Ferrer and Héctor Colomé.

Luna Caliente was co-produced by Viviana Films (recently founded by Aranda and Teresa Font), and Cre-Acción Films for €3.1m. The veteran director teamed up with DoP Joaquín Manchado, art director Josep Rosell, production manager Nano Montero, editor Font and composer José Nieto.
