Ferrara finds echoes of “his” Bronx in Naples

Abel Ferrara’s Naples is the city glimpsed in the accounts of a few female prisoners in Pozzuoli jail, women who have experienced drug dealing, robberies, violence and the degradation of a life without prospects.

But it is also the city described in the three fictional stories incorporated in his film Napoli Napoli Napoli (“Naples Naples Naples”) and penned by Peppe Lanzetta, Maurizio Braucci and Gaetano Di Vaio. Respectively, they recount a baptism of blood, a family drama suffused with violence and the real, personal experiences of former prisoner Di Vaio.

Presenting the film out of competition, Ferrara said: “It’s set in Naples, but this film could also be entitled New York, New York, New York or Detroit, Detroit, Detroit, owing to the similarities between these impressive 21st-century urban landscapes. Naples reminds me of New York in the '90s; there’s the same kind of violence and energy".

Produced by Minerva Production & Marketing, P.F.A. Films, Sons of Bronx, Massimo Cortesi and Luca Liguori, Napoli, Napoli, Napoli will be released in Italy by Minerva Pictures. Meanwhile, the US director has another film in the pipeline, based on a news story about a Naples robbery.
