is Finland’s entry for this year’s Oscars nominations in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

This is the second time the 38 year-old Härö is representing his country, after Mother of Mine [+see also:

, Finland’s pick of 2005.

Letters to Father Jacob was preferred over 14 other Finnish candidates, including Forbidden Fruit [+see also:

. The official selection committee described it as “a beautiful and touching film that leaves the minds of the audience silent. The actors bring the characters alive with subtle elements. The film is visually beautiful, the aesthetic and harmonious world created by the cinematography, set design and costume design are supported by the subtle but effective sound design and beautiful music.”

Harö’s film was produced by Rimbo Salomaa and Lasse Saarinen for Kinotar. It was released in Finland on April 3 and is the third biggest grosser of the year. International sales are handled by FilmSharks.

The 82nd Academy Award nominations will be announced on February 2, 2010, and the Oscars ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on March 7.
