Having garnered €5.3m and 827,750 admissions in the three days from October 9-11, it is undoubtedly the most successful release of 2009. Added to this are the figures for Monday 12, a bank holiday in Spain, which bring takings to €6.8m. These are just some of the impressive results achieved by Agora [+see also:

Alejandro Amenábar thus proves that he has not lost his audience-pulling power, as some people predicted. Although we don’t yet know how long the film will run (his previous works enjoyed extraordinarily long careers, thanks to word-of-mouth publicity, good reviews and awards), such an outstanding start is in itself excellent news for Spanish cinema.
