Komandarev wins the Saturno fest

November 28 saw the conclusion of the fifth edition of the Saturno International Film Festival. The event is the first and only one of its kind in Italy dedicated to the ties between cinema and history. The artistic directors are Ernesto G. Laura and Mariella Li Sacchi and festival president is Giuliano Montaldo.

At the awards ceremony, Michele Placido picked up a Golden Saturno for his career. The jury comprising John Francis Lane (president), Franco Giraldi and Gregorio Napoli bestowed Stephan Komandarev’s Bulgarian film The World Is Big and Salvation Lurks Around the Corner [+see also:

with two prizes: the Golden Saturno and the Best Actor nod to Miki Manojlovic (the charismatic actor of many of Emir Kusturica’s films). The film is a journey across Europe in search of the main character’s lost memory.

The Silver Saturno went to Polish film General Nil [+see also:

, on the life of Emil Fieldorf, unrecognized protagonist of the Polish Resistance against the Nazi and Russians, who was condemned to death in 1953 by the communist regime. The film is the third part of a trilogy by director Ryszard Bugajski, which includes Interrogation, winner of the Best Actress Award at Cannes in 1990).

The Best Actress award was presented to Jasmine Trinca for her performance in Alain Tasma’s Ultimatum [+see also:

. The film is set in Jerusalem on the eve of the Gulf War, in the dramatic days when Saddam Hussein threatened Israel with chemical and bacteriological attacks.

Italian title Sopra le Nuvole (“Above the Clouds”) by Sabrina Guigli and Riccardo Stefani picked up a Special Mention for their reconstruction of the 1944 Nazi massacres in Emilia Romagna, starring the survivors’ descendents.
