Zentropa receives €1.2m from Eurimages for von Trier, Arcel

Two Zentropa productions – Lars von Trier’s Melancholia and A Royal Affair by Nikolaj Arcel – have each been awarded €600,000 in production support from the Council of Europe’s Eurimages.

Melancholia, the upcoming psychological disaster movie by the iconic von Trier will be produced by Zentropa in co-production with Sweden (Memfis Film), France (Slot Machine) and Germany (Zentropa International Köln). Filming will start shooting in Trollhätan studios in Sweden on July 19. Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kirsten Dust and Alexander and Stellan Skarsgård star.

Arcel had a successful debut with King’s Game in 2004. The director/scriptwriter co-wrote The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo [+see also:

. His new feature A Royal Affair tells the story of a young queen who is married to an insane king. She falls secretly in love with his physician and together they start a revolution that changes their nation forever.

The film will be co-produced with Sweden (Trollhättan), Ireland (Subotica Entertainment) and Latvia (Film Angels Studio). It was one of the first projects to be awarded financial support from Riga City Council last April in return for filming in the Latvian capital. A Royal Affair is scheduled to open theatrically in Denmark in 2012.
