Baden-Wuerttemberg film fund to increase support to €10m

by

The film funding institute in the federal state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, which is dependent on the Medien und Filmgesellschaft, intends to take a significant step in its support for the film sector. It has announced an increase in its production funding for the current year, which will rise to €10m. This is double the amount granted last year and four times more than in 2008.

The institution’s new guidelines, which were jointly presented in Stuttgart by Stefan Mappus and Helmut Rau, president and Media Minister of Baden-Wuerttemberg respectively, put the emphasis on three sectors with great potential for growth in the region, including animation, series and young up-and-coming talents.

According to Mappus, the new strategy should lead to “the emergence of Baden-Wuerttemberg as the leading German region for animation”. He said that regions with less of a film tradition should try to stand out from established centres like Berlin and Cologne by specialising in specific sectors.

All this is part of a strategy bolstered by the creation in 2009 of the Animation Media Cluster Region Stuttgart, as well as a plan to launch production funding for computer games in 2011.
