BOX OFFICE Poland

Theatres post positive results for 2010

by

Audience figures in Polish theatres closed 2010 with 37.5m admissions and the second best total of the last 20 years, narrowly missing the 2009 record (39.1m viewers). The gulf of almost 14m admissions that separates the 2010 total from the lowest scores of recent years (23.6m viewers in 2005 for example) is particularly striking.

Topping the 2010 box office rankings is Avatar (3m admissions), followed by Shrek Forever After (2.47m viewers), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 [+see also:

(1.17m) and Alice In Wonderland (1.1m). All these titles were released on substantial print-runs with 235 prints for Avatar and Shrek Forever After, 198 for Harry Potter and 160 for Alice In Wonderland.

Finally, for the seventh consecutive year, an animated film made it onto the Polish box office podium. Also, for the second year in a row, there are no Polish titles in the top 5: this is a worrying trend for local production which had two features on the 2008 podium, one in 2007 and two in 2006.
