Charlotte Doyle set for Ireland shoot
American director Danny DeVito will film Irish/US coproduction The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle in Ireland in 2012.
The $28 million project will star Irish star Pierce Brosnan and US veteran Morgan Freeman. Based on the eponymous novel by Avi (Edward Irving Wortis), the film will tell the story of young Charlotte Doyle and her adventures on the high seas with a ruthless captain and a mutinous crew on a ship crossing from England to America in the 19th century. Brosnan will play the captain and Freeman the ship’s cook.
The project was first announced in 2008 with Saoirse Ronan due to play the title role. However, other actors are now being considered, as Ronan is too old to play the role.
Irish producer Tristan Orpen Lynch said, “The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle is a fantastic children’s adventure based on a bestselling novel, to be directed by Danny DeVito. It was originally set to shoot in the US but after meeting with Danny and his producers in LA the Irish Film Board facilitated a location scout with him last spring. We met again with Danny and Morgan in May and we are delighted they have now decided to bring this $28 million feature film to shoot entirely in Ireland next year. This high level production will provide an excellent employment opportunity for Irish cast and crew.”
The Irish co-producers on the project are Subotica Entertainment who will produce along with Irish DreamTime, Revelations Entertainment and Clear Black Films.
Intandem will handle international sales.
