Poland’s It Looks Pretty from a Distance wins Crossing Europe

The ninth Crossing Europe Film Festival in Linz (Apr 24-29) ended with Polish film It Looks Pretty From a Distance by Anka and Wilhelm Sasnal winning the main award in the European competition.

The film, which had previously won Best New Polish Film at Era New Horizons in 2011 also received a €10,000 prize in the competition of eight other European first or second films by their directors.

The €5,000 New Vision Award for the best film from the program section Panorama Europa Fiction for outstanding achievement in the visual field went to João Canijo’s Blood of My Blood [+see also:

from Portugal.

The recently established Federation of Film Critics of Europe and the Mediterranean (FEDEORA) had its first jury in Linz this year and it was divided. Three critics decided on the best documentary film by a director under 33 years of age and they chose two German films: A Letter from Germany by Sebastian Mez received the award, and a special mention went to Cemetery by Melanie Jilg. The other three critics were judging on the films by directors over 33 and went for Fernand Melgar’s Special Flight (Switzerland), with a special mention for Staff Entrance by Manuela Frésil from France.

The Audience Award, worth €1,000, went to Weekend by Andrew Haig (UK).

Festival Director Christine Dollhofer reported a new record in attendance for Crossing Europe: after 17,000 visitors in 2010 and 19,000 in 2011, this year the number rose to 21,000. The next edition of the Linz festival will take place from April 23-28, 2013.
