- Unspooling its 40th anniversary programme between August 17-23, the Norwegian International Film Festival in Haugesund, has several jobs for Norwegian actress Liv Ullmann

“Since I am their Honorary President, they can’t really avoid showing my films,” said Norwegian actress Liv Ullmann once, famously – and this year, celebrating its 40th anniversary, the Norwegian International Film Festival in Haugesund has programmed A Love Story: Liv & Ingmar, London-based Indian director Dheeraj Akolkar’s documentary of her 42-year relationship with Swedish director Ingmar Bergman.

The first foreign production to unspool at the International Indian Film Academy’s Videocon Weekend, aka the Bollywood Oscars, earlier this month (June) in Singapore, where Ullmann was honoured, A Love Story: Liv & Ingmar will launch the festival’s Nordic Focus programme at an August 17 gala.

“She actually takes her task very seriously, and does an invaluable job for Haugesund,” said Festival Director Gunnar Johan Løvvik. The Kon-Tiki used in the film – a replica of the wooden raft that Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl and five fellow scientists used for their voyage from South America to the Polynesian Islands – will anchor at the quayside in Haugesund. After the screening, the Norwegian Youth Symphony Orchestra will give an outdoor film concert.

The selection of Norwegian films for the showcase, which runs through August 23, includes author-turned-director Dag Johan Haugerud’s feature debut, I Belong, a tragic comedy about three women who are hit hard when small soft spots in their personalities meet the light of day. The festival’s marketplace, New Nordic Films, has reached an agreement with the EU Media Programme to receive €55,000 support annually over the next three years.
