Skyfall: Britain awaits return of iconic hero

Riding on the back of near-universal rave reviews and a glittering premiere attended by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall and further boosted by James Bond appearing alongside The Queen in a short film at the London Olympics opening ceremony, today’s release of Sam Mendes’s Skyfall [+see also:

is easily amongst the most anticipated in the franchise’s history. Added to the fact that the film marks 50 years of the franchise that began in 1962 with Dr. No, expectations are at fever pitch.

Daniel Craig, who plays Bond, said at the film’s premiere, “This feels even more special than the ones that have gone before for me. I’ve never been to a premiere like this. It’s incredible.” Javier Bardem, who plays the latest Bond villain, said, “50 years is a long time. That means they have been doing something really right, starting with the actors who have played Bond. They have all brought their own flavour to it.” Mendes said, “As the movie progresses, it gets more epic. I loved the scale of it. I think there is a possibility that I put everything I’ve ever wanted to put in a Bond movie into this movie.”

Skyfall shot extensively in London in early 2012, and features a number of iconic London landmarks as well as seeing the capital doubling for other international cities, such as Shanghai. Assisted by Film London, the production undertook a number of complex and ambitious set pieces on location in London. Producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said, “The complexities of shooting in one of the world’s most exciting locations was made so much easier with the willing enthusiasm and experience of everyone at Film London.”
