Four film festivals in one month

- The Romanian film festival diversity is striking in April, with as many as four events organized in Bucharest

Last night (April 7), the second edition of Cinepolitica International Film Festival came to an end, with its top award, the Cinepolitica trophy, going to Israel-France co-production Rock the Casbah [+see also:

 (photo), directed by Yariv Horowitz. Best film was Camp 14: Total Control Zone, a Germany-South Korea co-production about the political prisoners in North Korea. Cinepolitica, held for six days in Bucharest, opened with Marco Belocchio’s Sleeping Beauty and screened dozens of films on political topics, including documentaries about Vatican and old Romanian propaganda productions.

If one wants to become a famous Romanian director, one must first win an award at DaKino. The short film festival reached its 22nd edition at the beginning of April, after discovering all the directors from the so-called Romanian New Wave. The festival screened student films from all over the world and also the newest films made by the students of the Romanian Film and Theatre Academy. The winner of the Dakino Trophy is Berlinale Talent Campus production Five Ways to Kill a Man by Christopher BissetArnaud Dufeys received the Best Director award for his Atoms, while the Jury Special Award went to Tracks, by Nelli Guy.

On April 10 it’s high time for the seventh edition of NexT Film Festival, the short film festival held in memory of director Cristian Nemescu and sound designer Andrei Toncu, both killed in a car accident in August 2006, before finishing production for their first feature California Dreamin’ (Un Certain Regard award at Cannes 2007). For five days NexT 2013, which is also the beneficiary of the first crowd funding initiative in Romania, will screen the 23 films in its main competition, along with a plethora of sidebars and special programmes. 

On April 15 Bucharest IFF begins, the longest-running feature film festival held in the capital.
