Sex and Special Needs in Germany

- Getting My Brother Laid, Sven Taddicken's multiple award-winning feature comedy debut about the sentimental education of a handicapped man is out today in Italy

Getting My Brother Laid ("Mein Bruder, Der Vampir"), the directorial feature debut of a young German director called Sven Taddicken is out today, 30 April, in Italy.
Bringing comedy to such a delicate subject, the sexual education of people with special needs is quite a challenge for any director, especially a first-time one, but the 29-year-old Taddicken pulls it off magnificently.
Mike, Nic and Josch are brothers. Nic is 14 and desperate to lose his virginity, so is his handicapped brother Josch, 30... only Josch is determined to “do the deed” with Mike’s fiancée. The surprise ending solves all their problems.
Getting My Brother Laid got a warm reception from German critics, although some of them found the ending rather provocative. Produced by Gambit with Teamworx, SWR Baden-Baden and Bayerischer Rundfunk, Getting My Brother Laid won several important awards at international festivals, and was released in South Korea, Taiwan, Holland, Germany and will shortly be out in Belgium too. The film will be released today onto 10 Italian screens by courtesy of Sharada Film.
“A friend of mine called Matthias Pacht wrote the film,” said Sven Taddicken. “His brother was born with Down’s Syndrome and Matthias is only too familiar with the joys and difficulties of living with a person with special needs. We decided that the best way to tell this largely autobiographical story was to tell it like a comedy. I spent a few weeks in a special home for people with special needs and was taken by their sponteneity: they do what they want and are not inhibited in the same way as “normal” people.”
This directorial debut is further confirmation of the excellent state of health of young and coming German cinema, driven this year by the international hit and domestic blockbuster Good Bye Lenin! [+see also:
