21/08/2015 - British qualifying films of all budgets can get a rebate of 25%

The UK’s film tax relief measures, announced earlier in the year by Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, has received European State Aid approval. Previously, only the first £20 million on larger-budget films would qualify for the higher rebate rate of 25%, with the remaining qualifying expenditure earning 20%. Now, British qualifying films of all budget levels can apply for a rebate of 25% of UK qualifying expenditure. The new rate will apply to all productions dating from or after 1 April 2015. 

Osborne said, “A key part of our long-term economic plan is supporting our creative industries that contribute billions to the economy and provide millions of jobs. We want to see more films, like Gravity [+see also:

film profile] and Avengers: Age of Ultron, made in Britain, and that’s why we've made our film tax relief even more generous.” 

Adrian Wootton, chief executive of the British Film Commission (BFC) and Film London, said, “This most recent enhancement to the film tax relief is a real testament to the British government's continued support for our screen industries – a commitment that the BFC and its partners share.” 

British Film Institute CEO Amanda Nevill said, “The film tax relief is a key ingredient in the UK's winning combination of outstanding filmmaking talent and crews, world-leading studios and facilities, and iconic locations. It keeps us competitive on the world stage, and helps grow our economy and create jobs at home.” 

International films currently shooting in the UK include: Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Lucasfilm’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Warner Bros’ Harry Potter spin-off, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
