Tonight, Portuguese actress Leonor Silveira is being honoured with the first Bárbara Virgínia Award – a prize created by the Academy of Portuguese Cinema and dedicated to women who stand out in the film business.

Silveira, described by the jury as “a unique actress, one of a kind in Portugal and in the world”, is mainly known for her various performances in the films of Manoel de Oliveira, including Abraham’s Valley (1993), Porto of My Childhood (2001) and Magic Mirror (2005). Silveira was also involved in the management of Portugal’s film body, the ICA, until 2012. Her most recent film appearance was in João Nicolau’s new feature, John From [+see also:

, which is due for theatrical distribution in March 2016.

The Bárbara Virgínia Award is named after the first Portuguese female director, whose film Três Dias Sem Deus screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 1946. Virgínia then moved to Brazil, where she died last March at the age of 92.
