A rendez-vous with independent film in Matera
P.P.P. Death of the Poet by David Grieco

Five days dedicated to the world of independent cinema, with 15 premieres, trailers, events open to the public and discussions with industry professionals on current issues in the sector. This is what lies in store at this year’s V International Meeting of Independent Cinema, which will be held in Matera from 9-13 March.

There are several new elements to this year’s edition of the Meeting, which, for the first time, will not only focus on independent film productions, but will open itself up to the world of business. At the initiative of the AGPCI (Association of Young Independent Film Producers), starting from this year the Meeting will also involve the FICE (Italian Federation of Arthouse Cinema) and ANEC-AGIS in Apulia and Basilicata, as organisers of the event.

It will also be the first time that Matera, designated European Capital of Culture for 2019, has hosted the Meeting, which has been held in Montecatini, Trieste, Bologna and Pescara in the past. Other new features for this year include the opening of the event to the city: indeed, there will be a number of screenings of premieres, which the public of Matera will be able to attend free of charge. This year the Meeting will also try to help professional associations come up with a solution to the problem of the lack of films on offer over the summer months: the programme will offer exhibitors an overview of what will be available this spring and summer, with trailers and premieres.

15 films will have their premieres at the Meeting, comprising 11 feature films and four short films. Feature films open to the public include P.P.P. Death of the Poet [+see also:

There will be a number of discussions on issues of interest to the sector, such as the reform of the film law, young entrepreneurs in the audiovisual industry, the future of cinemas, culture and film in Basilicata, independent film and the region, film financing, distributors, programming and regional agencies, the appeal of Italian film abroad, and film in the Mediterranean.

The programme also features meeting with representatives from Italian and international distributors and a meeting with representatives of the Film Commission of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism. There will also be no shortage at this year’s edition of pitches from producers of projects under development or that have already been shot, which will be presented to distributors, exhibitors and international sales companies.

The Meeting is held with the support of Sensi Contemporanei, the Agency for Territorial Cohesion and the Lucana Film Commission, and the patronage of the Ministry for Labour and Social Policy, the Directorate General for Cinema of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, the Basilicata Region, the Municipality of Matera, the Matera Chamber of Commerce and AGIS.
