The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival reveals its competition titles

The 51^st edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) will kick off with the world premiere of the World War II drama Anthropoid (read the news), starring Jamie Dornan, Charlotte Le Bon, Aňa Geislerová and Toby Jones, and shot in the Czech Republic. The main competition will introduce two domestic films as world premieres: the posthumously completed movie by Czech New Wave filmmaker Jan Němec, the autobiographical The Wolf from Royal Vineyard Street [+see also:

The Czech Republic is also represented in the East of the West competition by 26-year-old emerging director Jiří Sádek and his feature debut, the lyrical horror The Noonday Witch [+see also:

film profile], about a young man trying to make sense of his life. The Hungarian dark action-comedy Kills on Wheels, directed by Attila Till, about a trio of wheelchair-bound hitmen, will open the East of the West competition.

The festival will continue with the new Future Frames initiative launched last year, which spotlights the next generation of filmmakers – namely, film students and graduates. Award-winning talents such as Julia Furer (with her documentary Julian), Romania’s Roxana Stroe (with A Night at Tokoriki) and Davit Pirtskhalava from Georgia (with his directorial debut, Father) have made it onto the final line-up. “The inaugural edition of Future Frames was one of the most successful events at last year’s KVIFF. We’re excited about continuing our collaboration with the European Film Promotion and working together to provide some incredibly talented, aspiring filmmakers with what are often their very first encounters with important film-industry players as well as the highly knowledgeable audience,” says artistic director Karel Och.
