Golden Lions for Lifetime Achievement go to Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jerzy Skolimowski
- From this year onwards, the Venice Film Festival will start handing out two Golden Lions for Lifetime Achievement – one for directors and the other for actors
French actor Jean-Paul Belmondo and Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski will be the recipients of the Golden Lions for Lifetime Achievement at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival (31 August - 10 September 2016).
From this year onwards, the board of directors of the Venice Biennale, presided over by Paolo Baratta, has decided to give out two Golden Lions for Lifetime Achievement: the first will be bestowed upon a director or a person from the world of film production, while the second will go to an actor or actress.
The director of the Venice Film Festival, Alberto Barbera, justified the choice of iconic actor Jean-Paul Belmondo as follows: “Thanks to his fascinating face, irresistible charm and extraordinary versatility, he has played roles in dramas, adventure movies and even comedies, making him a star who is universally respected by engagé directors and escapist cinema alike.”

film profile], to name only his most recent films), Barbera declared: “He is one of the most representative exponents of the modern cinema born during the nouvelles vagues of the 1960s. He and Roman Polanski are the two filmmakers who contributed most to the renewal of Polish cinema during that same period.”
The complete programme of the 73rd Venice International Film Festival will be officially unveiled on 28 July.
