Romanian box office grows by 14% in the first semester

The Romanian box office has seen growth of approximately 14% this year in terms of admissions, according to the country’s leading film website, Cinemagia. The increase in earnings is slightly bigger, at 14.35%, which is explained by the rising number of 3D releases and the opening of a second IMAX cinema in the city of Timişoara. During the first six months of 2016, approximately 6.08 million tickets were sold in local cinemas, raking in total earnings of €26.2 million.

The Jungle Book, Deadpool, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Dirty Grandpa were the only four releases to generate more than 300,000 admissions. 2016 has so far been lacking in juggernauts like Furious 7 (650,000 admissions in 2015), but this was compensated for by a bigger number of releases that took more than 200,000 admissions: only four did so in the first semester of 2015, but as many as nine managed the feat this year.

The average ticket price increased from €4.22 in 2015 to €4.33 in 2016.
