, the second feature film by French-Turkish filmmaker Deniz Gamze Erguven, who rose to prominence with Mustang [+see also:

(which was nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, four César awards and multiple international awards after having its premiere in Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes in 2015). The cast for this English-language film features young Californian rapper Kaalan WalkerLamar Johnson (discovered in TV series The Next Step), Rachel Hilson (who also rose to fame on the small screen in The Good Wife), star Halle Berry (who most notably won the Oscar for Best Actress in 2002 for her performance in Monster’s Ball), and famous British actor Daniel Craig (who has played the title role in the last four James Bond films).

Written by Deniz Gamze Erguven, the screenplay plunges us into the life of a foster family in South Central, a few weeks before the riots that set the city of Los Angeles on fire in 1992, following the verdict in the Rodney King case. 

Produced by Charles Gillibert for CG Cinéma (which also produced Mustang), Kings is being produced in partnership with Maven and Bliss, co-produced by France 2 Cinéma, Ad Vitam (which will also handle distribution in French theatres) and Belgian company Scope Pictures, and has also been pre-purchased by Canal+. The eight upcoming weeks of filming will take place in South Central with David Chizallet (nominated for the 2016 César and winner of the 2016 Lumière award) as director of photography. International sales will be handled by American company IMR (a joint venture up and running since last spring between Insiders – run by Vincent Maraval – and MadRiver Pictures).
