Following the establishment of their common programme for incentivising the creation of series in French-speaking Belgium, the RTBF and CCA spoke out at Séries Mania (Paris, 13-23 April) about the success of this initiative, but also about what we can expect to see from it in the years to come. The two first series to come out of the programme, The Break and Ennemi Public, have not only turned the spotlight on a multitude of talented young Belgian filmmakers who were previously relatively unknown, but have also been hugely successful in Belgium and abroad. They were each sold in almost 18 countries, and were rather prestigiously aired on France 2 and TF1 in France. The Break was even pre-purchased by Netflix. Filming for season two of each series is scheduled for this summer.

Behind these success stories are a number of burgeoning new talents. The Séries Mania Festival was an opportunity to promote four new projects currently under development, which should hit screens in two to three years’ time. Comme les autres, a series created by Jean-Luc Goosens and Sophia Perie, is an adaptation of Flemish series Tytgat Chocolat, the pilot for which has already been made by Vincent Lannoo (In the Name of the Son [+see also:

, series Trepalium). It is being produced by Les Gens (formerly Stromboli), which was also behind TV series Melting Pot and Esprits de Famille

Motel, created by Valérie Lemaître, Aylin Yay and Akima Seghir (the screenwriter for series such as Caïn, Malaterra and Chérif), will be produced by Nexus Factory. Panache Productions presented La Patrouille, by Vincent Lavachery, Vincent Beaujean and Axel du Bus, which revolves, as the title suggests, around a Belgian institution, the scouts. The last series pitched was Alerte, by Johan Massez, Vincent Vanneste and Olivier Englebert, which is being produced by Wrong Men (Prejudice [+see also:

), and also participated in Séries Mania’s Coproduction Forum. The professionals in attendance were also treated to the first images from two series: u42 (which will be broadcast in the autumn) and Champion (filming forthcoming).
