The Shanghai Film Festival honours European cinema

- Russia’s Kharms and Poland’s I'm a Killer are among the European films crowned at the Chinese festival
The Shanghai Film Festival concluded its 20th edition on 26 June. The Golden Goblet Award for Best Feature Film, given out by a jury chaired by Romanian Palme d’Or winner Cristian Mungiu, was awarded to Pedicab, directed by Paolo Villaluna of the Philippines. The Jury Grand Prix went to the Iranian film Yellow, helmed by Mostafa Taghizadeh. Yellow’s lead, Sareh Bayat, was named Best Actress.
Five European films took home top prizes. Poland’s Maciej Pieprzyca was crowned Best Director for I’m a Killer [+see also:

film profile]. The jury praised Pieprzyca for his creation of “a world both palpable and mesmerising in its darkness and human drama”. Russian writer-director Ivan Bolotnikov was awarded the Best Screenplay Award for his biographical drama Kharms [+see also:
film profile]. The film’s director of photography, Shandor Berkeshi, was given the Award for Best Cinematography. Kharms was structured as a Russian-Lithuanian-Macedonian co-production.

film profile], helmed by Romanian director Cătălin Saizescu, was given the Award for Outstanding Artistic Achievement. The jury highlighted the film’s “courage to tackle delicate contemporary dramas” and “its ability to combine different perspectives upon the same truth”. Germany’s When Paul Came Over the Sea [+see also:
film profile] was named Best Documentary.
The Polish-UK co-production Loving Vincent [+see also:

film profile] scooped the honour of Best Animation Film. The groundbreaking feature was highly praised by the jury, who declared: “Never has there been a film that spoke to the heart of an artist like Loving Vincent. Animation and fine art painting come together in this loving tribute to the work and life of a master artist.”
