The CCA supports the new films by Alain Berliner and Benoît Mariage at its 42nd session

The Film Selection Committee of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation’s Film and Audiovisual Centre has revealed the titles supported during its 42nd session, the final one of 2017. It will be backing Alain Berliner and Benoît Mariage as they return to the world of film, as well as Nabil Ben Yadir and Philippe Van Leeuw, in addition to a number of promising co-productions, such as the upcoming projects by Ari Folman and Mati Diop.
Berliner, who has forged a very active career in television, but whose most recent feature, Gone for a Dance, dates back to 2007, is back with a new project, Rendezvous in Paradise. The film will be staged by the director’s own company, WFE. As for Benoît Mariage (Scouting for Zebras [+see also:
film profile], 2014), he is busy crafting a new movie with an intriguing title: Bilal Pacino. The pitch itself is no less alluring: in the film, we follow the family-related trials and tribulations and professional setbacks of a young, Brussels-based actor of Moroccan heritage whose fortunes turn when he lands a small but enviable role in a major film, playing a gigolo in the arms of Catherine Deneuve. It will be very interesting to see what this movie has in store, as the pitch draws its inspiration directly from a scene in Jaco Van Dormael’s The Brand New Testament [+see also:

film profile]. Once again, Daylight is producing, together with Scope Pictures.
Other directors who are already hard at work include Nabil Ben Yadir, who is readying Animals, a project about which we know next to nothing, save for the fact that he has co-written it with Antoine Cuypers (Prejudice [+see also:

film profile]) and that it will be staged by 10.80 films, the firm created by the filmmaker with producer Benoît Roland (Wrong Men). Meanwhile, after the Rwandan genocide (The Day God Went Away [+see also:
film profile]) and war-torn Syria (Insyriated [+see also:
interview: Philippe Van Leeuw
film profile]), Philippe Van Leeuw is preparing to tackle the Mexican border in The Wall, which is again being produced by Altitude 100.
We should also mention the support granted to the movies by François Pirot, Samuel Malhoure and Michel Wald, Christophe Hermans, and Olivier Pairoux, as well as the backing provided to co-productions, including Horse Boy, the new Ari Folman film co-produced by Beluga Tree, the new outfit set up by Diana Elbaum (formerly of Entre chien et loup), plus Fire Next Time by Mati Diop (see the article), co-produced by Frakas.
