Paris is becoming one of the most important pillars in the immersive digital era, and a new festival is ready to be launched in the city. NewImages Festival will be the first event entirely dedicated to all the different forms of digital creation and virtual-reality worlds. Created by the teams behind the Paris Virtual Film Festival and I LOVE TRANSMEDIA, NewImages will give both the general public and professionals the chance to gain a better understanding of the new media. Running for five days, from 4-8 April, at the Forum des images and other locations in the Les Halles neighbourhood in central Paris, NewImages expects to welcome more than 10,000 visitors to its first edition.

According to early pieces of information, NewImages will showcase a wide selection of innovative and original works. Everything spans all forms of immersive and interactive experiences, including those in virtual, augmented and mixed reality, along with video games, digital series and interactive narration. Also, a brand-new, exclusive holographic show will run every night in the surroundings of the Saint-Eustache Church.

As for the industry section, NewImages also offers a heavyweight two-day programme – unspooling on 5 and 6 April – that will help professionals to interconnect and organise possible meetings for their future projects. Focusing both on the economic aspect of the industry and on the projects in development, the invited guests are content creators and financiers, representatives of major US players including Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon (GAFA), international incubators and financing centres. According to the estimates, around 1,000 accredited attendees will represent their works, and the schedule will include more than 25 keynote talks, round-table debates, project pitches and case studies.

Regarding the differences and similarities with the other Parisian digital events, Jérémy Pouilloux, artistic director of the NewImages Festival, explains to Cineuropa: “NewImages is going to be more like I LOVE TRANSMEDIA than the Paris Virtual Film Festival inasmuch as we are programming all kinds of digital works, and not only VR or AR. NewImages focuses on the digital transformation of the cultural sector in general and on the new images, including VR, AR, interactive works, interaction for theatres, storytelling for mobiles, video games and more. Certainly, VR is attractive, but the way authors express themselves is not restricted to this particular form, and we are more interested in the subject and the way the audience accesses the works than we are in the form.”

NewImages was created by the Forum des images, and is organised with the support of the CNC, the French Minister of Culture, the Institut françaisINATV5 MondeARTEFrance TélévisionsSACDSCAM and the Forum des Halles.
