Javier Gutiérrez toplining Mirage
by Alfonso Rivera
- The two-time Goya winner is heading up the cast of the new film by Oriol Paulo, who hopes to replicate the success of The Invisible Guest
On 26 February, Javier Gutiérrez was not able to come up and collect his Award for Best Actor of 2017 (for his performance in The Motive [+see also:

film profile], a work that garnered him his second Goya after the one he got for Marshland [+see also:

film profile]) handed out by Fotogramas magazine, because he was in fact a fair way away from Madrid: at that time he was in Barcelona shooting Mirage, the third feature by Oriol Paulo. The shoot for this thriller – a genre in which the director of The Body [+see also:
film profile] can easily hold his own – began on 16 February and will continue for ten weeks in Barcelona and Las Palmas, on Gran Canaria. With his new movie, Paulo hopes to rival or even beat the success of his second outing, The Invisible Guest [+see also:
film profile], which starred Mario Casas, José Coronado and Bárbara Lennie, and which has grossed more than €26 million in China, besides topping the Spanish, Greek and Korean box offices.
The cast of Mirage is rounded off by Argentinian hunk Chino Darín (who seems to be increasingly omnipresent in Spanish cinema and will grace screens in the comedy The Laws of Thermodynamics [+see also:

film profile] by Mateo Gil in April – see the news), Almodóvar girl Adriana Ugarte (Julieta [+see also:

The storyline, written by the Catalan director together with Lara Sendim (the pair previously worked together on the screenplay for The Body), shows how a disturbance between two different time periods causes a worrying butterfly effect. As a result of this event, Vera, a happily married mother, has the opportunity to save the life of a boy who lived in her house 25 years prior. However, the consequences of her good deed set off a chain reaction that causes her to wake up in a new reality in which her daughter has never been born and her husband doesn’t even know her. In a race against time, she will have to find out exactly what it was that changed everything when she saved the boy’s life, but at the same time, from her new vantage point, she will come to learn that her former life was nothing but a mirage.
Mirage is a production by Atresmedia Cine, Think Studio, Colosé Producciones and Mirage Studio AIE, in conjunction with Warner Bros España, in cooperation with Netflix and with backing from the Catalonian Institute of Cultural Enterprises.
