27/06/2023 - Of the projects selected, 6 hail from Italy, 2 from Germany, 1 from Austria and 1 from the UK, accounting for a total of 77 days of filming in South Tyrol

Ten new projects are set to be financed by the IDM Film Commission Südtirol, following the second call of 2023. Of these projects, six hail from Italy, two from Germany, one from Austria and one from Great Britain, equating to 77 days of filming overall in South Tyrol. Most of these productions will adopt the “Green shooting” protocol introduced by the IDM in order to limit the environmental impact of film production on the region.

Currently in the production phase, the TV series La valanga azzurra, directed by Giovanni Veronesi and produced by Fandango, is set to receive support. The director behind Manual of Love and No Country for the Young [+see also:

film profile], who penned the screenplay alongside Domenico Procacci and Lorenzo Fabiano, will bring back to life - by way of his protagonists’ voices, anecdotes, behind-the- scenes-stories, and shots from the time - the successes of the historic Italian national skiing championships held in the ‘70s. The IDM is also supporting the historic drama written and directed by Nick Hamm Wilhelm Tell, produced by Switzerland, Italy and the UK via Freeturn and Tempo Productions, together with Matteo Rovere’s Groenlandia as executive producer. The film revolves around the ups and downs of Swiss hero Guglielmo Tell in around 1300, at a time when the Austrians oppressed and looted the Swiss people and their lands.

Produced by Austria (Amour Fou Vienna, in co-production with Belgium’s Take Five), Happyland, the new film by the South Tyrolean director and screenwriter Evi Romen (who scooped 3 Austrian Film Awards in 2021 for Why Not You [+see also:

film profile]), sees a 45-year-old woman returning to her home country after a career as a musician in London, and stumbling across the ghosts of her youth: the members of her former band. Woodwalkers by Damian John Harper will also be receiving funding in the production phase. Produced by Germany’s Blue Eyes Fiction, in co-production with South Tyrolean firm Filmvergnuegen and Austria’s Dor Film, this family fantasy centres around a half-human, half-mountain-lion shapeshifter raised in the wilderness of the Rocky Mountains by his adoptive human family, from whom he hides his true identity.

Last but not least, the IDM will also back two documentaries in production: the new work written and directed by Reinhold Messner, K2 - Der große Berg, which is produced by South Tyrolean firm Dolomites and which recounts the secrets behind the first attempt to climb K2 by an Italian expedition in 1954; and Smach by Timian Hopf, produced by Germany’s Michael Kalb Filmproduktion, which revolves around a group of artists who travel from all over the world to create sculptures and installations designed to blend surreally into the background of the Dolomite landscape. Rounding off the list of projects funded in the production phase are two short films: Una memoria by Costanza Lettieri and Moussa & Rita by director Andrea Costa.

Meanwhile, in the pre-production phase, two projects have been earmarked for support: the feature film Confusia by Cecilia Bozza Wolf, which is produced by Bolzano-based firm Albolina Film and which recounts the misadventures of a trio of drag queens with unstable artistic careers and disastrous private lives, who get the unexpected opportunity to perform in an advert for the Alps; and the thriller TV series Axis directed by Sven Bohse and produced by Germany’s Ringel Film, telling the story of a former Neo Nazi who’s sent back to his native area as an informer in order to prevent an imminent attack and secretly save his brother.
