14% drop in admissions

73,9 million spectators less in the theatres of 11 European countries during the first 9 months of 2005: those were the figures published yesterday by the National Film Centre CNC, compiled by the research and statistics office at the UK Film Council. Between January and September 2005, a general drop in audiences hit the old continent, varying between -7,4% (Denmark) and -21,5% (Germany, October included), an estimate of between -30% and -40% has been advanced by the Czech Republic in the absence of available figures. In total, of the 11 territories looked at, the decline left admissions at 528,1 million in 2004 against 454,2 million for the same period in 2005. Concerning the big markets, the UK dropped to -8,8% (from 127,6 million down to 116,6% spectators), France -13,4% and Italy -13,3% (from 73,1 million to 63,4 million, October included). The decline also hit Norway (-9%), Holland (-10%), Sweden (-15%), Switzerland (-16,4%), Lithuania (-17,4%) and Finland (-19,2%), while some countries, such as Spain, did not respond to the appeal for figures..

As for France, the CNC also revealed yesterday the figures for October 2005admissions. With around 17,15 million spectators and -14,1% compared to October 2004, last month resembled its predecessors, with a total of 137,64 million admissions since the start of the year 2005, a drop of 14% compared to the first 10 months of 2004. On the contrary, market share for French films in 2005 remained at a high level, 37,8% against 51,3% for American productions, the level of European non-national films being valued at 4%. And French features appear to have started off well in November since Les chevaliers du ciel (Ridres of thes ky)heads the box office with 562 000 entrées in 5 days, ahead of Merry Christmas [+see also:
