A glimpse at Sitges' European menu

, which was recently in official competition at Cannes (see news), has been chosen to open the upcoming Sitges International Film Festival of Catalonia. The famous event, mainly but not exclusively focused on fantasy films, will celebrate its 39th edition from October 6-15.

Del Toro, a Mexican-born director whose latest projects have been backed by Spanish production outfits, will also be at the centre of a Special Focus on his films in an edition that – according to festival director Ángel Sala – will bring some of the most recent fantasy titles by European filmmakers into the limelight.

(Eqlipse Producciones Cinematográficas), and Thomas Dunn's thriller The Ungodly, which benefited from the participation of Catalan producer Jordi Rediu (Zip Films).

Sitges 2006 will also pay tribute to veteran director David Lynch and locally premiere his latest film, INLAND EMPIRE, a European production by French outfit Studio Canal, due to have its world premiere in the upcoming Venice International Film Festival (see news).
