Lusomundo's step towards digital screening takes place approximately two months before the highly anticipated opening of Mediaplex. Announced as the first cinema complex totally equipped to project digital films in Europe, Mediaplex will be located in the centre of Porto – in six venues formally managed by Castello Lopes – and promises to fight part of the city's cultural drought, which has been particularly felt since the closing of two arthouse theatres run by Paulo Branco's exhibition branch Medeia.

Cinema Novo – the cooperative run by Mario Dorminsky that is also behind the organisation of the Fantasporto Film Festival – will now handle the programme. The largest cinema (over 600 seats) will be reserved for mainstream titles while the other five (180 seats each) will specialize in Asian, European and indie US titles. Parallel activities such as the screening of short films and literary events will also be part of the Mediaplex programme.
