Local films keep figures up

by

According to figures published by the Danish Film Institute, local films fared very well during the first five months of 2007, to take a 33% market share (up 10% from 2006 in the same period) despite a 4% drop in general admissions.

Danish films garnered approximately 1.84 million admissions, over 500,000 more than in 2006. Five Danish titles were in the overall Top 10: Niels Nørløv Hansen’s comedy Anja & Viktor: Flaming Love [+see also:

Anders Geertsen, head of the DFI’s distribution department, said: “We’ve had very good results from Danish feature films so far and are very happy with the first part of the year. Denmark has had unsually warm weather during Easter, which means that people have not gone to the cinemas so much but still, figures are good and we hope they will be at least like last year, with a market share for Danish films above 25%. It looks very promising”.

European films remained stable, with 670,000 tickets sold and a market share of almost 14%. The most popular films were the UK/US mainstream titles Mr Bean’s Holiday [+see also:

(which picked up another 174,538 admissions in 2007 in addition to the 704,000 of 2006), followed by the French Arthur and the Invisibles [+see also:

(116,062).

US films lost the most ground, from a 62% market share in 2006 to 48%. No doubt this downturn is just temporary with US tentpoles Spiderman 3, Pirates of the Caribbean 3, Die Hard 4 and The Fantastic 4 already driving figures up, soon to be joined by the US/UK co-production Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (July 13).

On the domestic front, The Substitute [+see also:

has passed the 65,000 admissions mark in only two weeks, and The Art of Crying 214,000 admissions.
