Six Spanish productions have been selected to compete in the official section of the 53rd Seminci - Valladolid Film Festival (October 24-November 1), alongside films by Atom Egoyam, Amos Gitai and Rodrigo Pla. The selection was made by the festival's new director, Javier Angulo, whose final list of 20 films pays particular attention to European cinema.

La buena nueva by theatre director-turned-filmmaker Helena Taberna is among the six selected titles. Basque actor Unax Ugalde stars in a story about a priest who risks his life to defend the lives of others during the civil war. Another female director, Chus Gutiérrez, will present a film about the drama of illegal immigrants approaching the Spanish coast by boat. Nicolás Muñoz's Animales de compañía is the story of a man about to retire, with a cast that includes María Botto, Nancho Novo and Miguel Rellán. Abel García Roure's documentary debut Una cierta verdad focuses on the issues of mental disease.

The official section includes a total of five feature debuts, among them the cancer drama The Guitar by Amy Redford, daughter of Robert Redford.

Closing the festival will be British director Stephen Walter’s Young@Heart, a documentary about a group of retired people who become rock stars in their own right.
