Polish director Zbigniew Rybczynski, is interviewed during the Pesaro International Film Festival of New Cinema 2003, on the occasion of the retrospective dedicated to him.
Zbigniew Rybczynski is a filmmaker who not only has won numerous prestigious industry awards both in the United States and internationally, but he is also know as a teacher of cinematography, and digital cinematography. He is in fact a recognized pioneer in HDTV (high-definition television) technology.
In the interview, he talks about digital cinema referring to Kafka, the film he produced in 1992, using a high definition technology in "analog".
He describes the shooting, done in a small studio with all artificial components, and how he became aware of the need to involve computer graphics to create elements that could not be photographed in reality.
He considered the film as an occasion to acquire knowledge and new experiences, which led him to study new sciences, guiding him to make something contemporary and extra ordinal.
The director also talks about high costs involved for film production. Films are expensive because they involve complicated methods of production. In fact his productions were always financed by international co-productions.
He concludes the interview saying that he hopes to find a European partner to produce his next big production, and in particular he wishes to establish a collaboration with Italy.
Rybczynski has also created several music videos for artists such as Art of Noise, Mick Jagger, Pet Shop Boys, Lou Reed and many others.
