ESPERPENTOS

by José Luis García Sánchez

synopsis

Don Manolito and Don Estrafalario spend the last days of the Primo de Rivera dictatorship seeking out the plays written by their favourite writer, Ramón del Valle Inclán, which have been banned by the government. One day, they come across a reading of Las Galas del Difunto, a portrait of the unhinged young soldiers returning from having lost the Colony. Another time, during a country fair, in small house they see one of the few theatrical stagings of Valle-Inclán: Los Cuernos de Don Friolera, a cruel story about defending honour codes. They even have the fortune to see a screening of the first film made from a Valle Inclán text, The Captain's Daughter, a playful look at relations between the intendancy military and the country's defence. All this while awaiting the best premiere everyone is dreaming of: the Second Spanish Republic. A drama that likewise did not last very long. But it was a beautiful dream, like the "esperpentos" of Don Ramón.
