The main characters are the Xs and the Ys – two average families, without any particular ambitions, without children – regular consumers. They don’t live real lives, they just survive. The husbands don’t enjoy their jobs, that’s why they have a “hobby” - to make their lives worthwhile. The wives are housewives and they are mainly occupied by the thought of reproduction. Both families settle in two identical houses in a new neighborhood. Their houses are opposite and they gradually come to detest each other. There isn’t any good reason for this, only the resemblance between them is so close in all aspects that they come to hate each other to death.
