During a good film weekend – from Friday to Sunday – Norwegian theatres will register around 150,000 admissions, but on Saturday 5 November, they clocked in at 203,065. The reason? A new record has been set for Norwegian cinema association Film & Kino’s annual promotional effort, the Big Cinema Day.

“It is really amazing,” said Guttorm Petterson, managing director of Film & Kino. “Naturally, cinema chains are dominating the results in the large cities, but smaller venues also contribute – number four on the list, Fredrikstad, with a population of fewer than 80,000, sold more than 10,000 tickets. One visitor there watched more than 12 films.”

A collaboration between Film & Kino, the Norwegian Distributors’ Association and all of the country’s privately or publicly owned theatres, the Big Cinema Day offers half-price tickets for all films, topping it all off with audience competitions and entertainment, and special film programmes.

Several cinemas organised a screening of New Zealand director Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-2003), while others showed previews of Norwegian director Terje Rangnes’ upcoming Fantefilm Fiksjon release, Carpenter Andersen Meets Santa Claus [+lire aussi :
