The Director’s Assembly was held at the Cannes Film Festival, as part of the Directors’ Fortnight, in collaboration with the Society of Filmmakers (SRF) and Cineuropa, among others. The assembly focused on the European crisis and its consequences on the Member States’ cultural policies.

Well-known filmmaker, and also founding member of the SRF, Costa-Gavras chaired the assembly. Filmmakers Ágnes Kocsis, Joachim Lafosse, Cristian Mungiu, Silvio Soldini and Javier Rebollo, and co-presidents of the SRF Giorgio Cosetti and Jean Jacque Jauffret took part in it. Entering the topic of European crisis, the discussion ranged from the freedom of creation within the current context of financial adversity and the social responsibility of cinema, to the cultural exception, the connection with the audience and the problems of distribution.

In this third and last part, the discussion revolves around filmmaking, its diffusion and its reception. Attendees argue about maintaining the diversity of filmmaking against autocensorship and financial expectations, keeping European creativity safe from American strength or finding the way to get to a lost audience.
