Cineuropa: Can you describe your most intense experience in producing a film?
Monica Lazurean Gorgan: When I ate pickled and cooked rabbit, after 11 shooting days with a beautiful and very much alive rabbit. In other words, my experience as producer for Adrian Sitaru’s latest feature film, Domestic, a bittersweet comedy currently in post-production. It is an ambitious project, a co-production with Germany, supported by Eurimages, a film that speaks about people who eat the animals they love and animals that love people unconditionally.

In Cannes you will also present Touch Me Not, Adina Pintilie's debut feature. Can you tell us more about this project and about other new films in your company's portofolio?
Touch Me Not is a personal exploration on how human beings can reach intimacy in the most unexpected ways. This feature film has already been quite successful: it was selected in Altelier of Cinefondation in this year's Cannes. It received the Production Award in Torino Film Lab 2011, the greatest score from the MEDIA evaluators in the category Single Project, first session - 2011, the ARTE France award in Cinemart 2011, Special Mention Cinelink 2011, developed in Binger Script and FilmLab and Nipkow 2011.

At the moment we are developing the feature length documentary Circuit (provisional title), co-directed by Michaela Kirst and Monica Lazurean-Gorgan, a project that follows one man in his fight against forest extinction and timber mafia.

We are also working on an ambitious feature film, a co-production with the UK to be shot in London, based on the book The Death of a Salaryman by Fiona Campbell, with director Sitaru again. This will be a comedy about a man who is fired on his 40th birthday. Broken and embarrassed, he must learn how to lie and gamble in order to achieve his extraordinary dream.

If you had five million euro, what kind of film you would produce?
It would be either a combination between Dead Man by Jim Jarmusch and The Man Without a Past by Aki Kaurismaki, or a musical horror with Dracula, starring Iggy Pop.

What's the most important advantage of making films in Romania? What about the biggest disadvantage?
The great advantage is that we have some very good directors, with a very strong personal voice, whereas the great disadvantage is the film financing system, plagued by corruption and the lack of film funds. For example, this year we still don’t know whether we are going to have a call for support grants from the Romanian Film Center. And in this field it is essential to have plans and strategies.

You are looking for new co-production partners. Are you interested in certain countries?
I would very much like to co-produce with the Scandinavian countries. I have my eyes set on Sweden, as I know quite well their film financing system and I’m in contact with several Swedish production companies. Also, I would like to establish a co-production with Finland; this is a country that won me over through the films of Aki Kaurismaki. I hope that in a not-too-distant future a Romania-Finland co-production would be developed.
