Movie theatre network Europa Cinemas and sales agent network Europa International have launched the first edition of Tales of Europe, a pilot project that aims to support the circulation and promotion of European films that need to be introduced to the US market. The presentation of the new initiative took place during Art House Convergence’s (the network of US arthouse cinemas) tenth conference in Utah, and it was introduced by Daniela Elstner, CEO of Doc & Film International, and Susan Wendt, director of International Sales and Marketing at TrustNordisk.

Supported by the Creative Europe MEDIA Programme, Tales of Europe includes ten films, most of which were screened at some of last year’s major film festivals, but none of which has a US distributor. It focuses mainly on up-and-coming and new directors, and there is a wide variety of films, ranging from movies covering different topics related to social or current issues to historical dramas and comedies. The European productions are available to US exhibitors, which are able to book them à la carte for a low flat fee for two screenings. All of the films will also be available on EclairPlay and in all digital formats.

Speaking about the launch of Tales of Europe, Claude-Eric Poiroux, general director, Europa Cinemas, underlines: “This initiative will enable free exchanges between US and European exhibitors in terms of expertise and best practices. US and European exhibitors will learn dynamic new approaches from each other’s different situations – especially ways of attracting new audiences, and younger audiences in particular – and develop sustainable business models for the wider circulation of European films.”

Jean-Christophe Simon, Europa International president, further focused on the objectives of the project: “We would like to facilitate European films’ access to the US market. We want to test targeted release patterns in theatres and adapted promotional strategies, which in the end will bring more visibility to European productions and help them to reach more audiences. Our aim is to increase the competitiveness of our beloved European cinema.”
