Renowned commercial director Ivan Zachariáš will be returning to the director’s chair for HBO’s upcoming six-part miniseries Oblivious, a spy drama set in the 1980s in the Czech Republic, after his stint co-directing Wasteland.

HBO is dedicated to discovering and nurturing local writing talents in Central and Eastern Europe (read the interview with HBO Europe’s executive producer, Steve Matthews) – something it proved with Burning Bush, which was written by newcomer Štěpán Hulík, who subsequently penned the entire Wasteland miniseries. The company is continuing in the same vein by hiring Czech playwright Ondřej Gabriel to write Oblivious. Besides a couple of productions by the Kabaret Caligula theatre group, he has also written scripts for Ritual and Atavism, neither of which has so far been produced.

Matthews added: “Our intention is always to do originals in the future; we have got to know the talent pool [over the past five or six years] and feel confident that there are stories in the region to tell, and it is my job to go and look for them.”
