The Orphanage biggest Spanish box-office hit in five years

is the highest-grossing Spanish hit of the past five years and the second most successful film among audiences, after Mortadelo & Filemon: The Big Adventure.

Bayona’s debut film thus emerges as the biggest surprise hit in Spain in recent years and adds to its string of successes, after its excellent box office performance, its seven Goya awards and its wide distribution, in countries such as the US, the UK, France, Belgium, Germany and many more.

Having grossed €24m and garnered 4,274,355 admissions by December 31, 2007, The Orphanage, proves to be the highest-grossing box office hit since 2003, outstripping celebrated films such as Alatriste [+see also:

(2006), The Protector (2005) and The Sea Inside [+see also:
trailer

]
(2004).

Moreover, last year The Orphanage outperformed Hollywood mega-productions such as the latest Pirates of the Caribbean instalment and Shrek the Third, and was challenged only by Spiderman 3 and 300, which was number one at the Spanish box office last year.

The Orphanage was presented at last year’s Cannes Film Festival by its international sales agent, French company Wild Bunch.
