Mundruczó’s Delta edges closer to competition

The official selection for the 61st edition of the Cannes Film Festival (May 14-25) will be unveiled on Thursday April 17 at the traditional press conference and rumours are circulating about the 2008 Palme d’Or contenders (see news).

The list is subject to change, as Thierry Frémeaux’s team have still to evaluate numerous films that are scarcely completed. However, according to our information, the talented Hungarian filmmaker Kornél Mundruczó has a good chance of making his first appearance in official competition with Delta [+see also:

, his third feature.

Lauded at the Locarno Festival in 2002 for his debut film Pleasant Days [+see also:

and highly acclaimed at Cannes in the Un Certain Regard section for Johanna [+see also:

in 2005, the 32 year-old director stole the show at the 39th Hungarian Film Week in February, with Delta picking up the Golden Reel for Best Film and the Gene Moskowitz Prize awarded by foreign critics.

Delta, which wrapped up after an eventful shoot (see news), stars Félix Lajkó, Orsi Tóth, Lili Monori and Sándor Gáspár. The film is freely adapted from Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Euripide’s Electra.

Produced by Proton Cinema in co-production with German company Essential Filmproduktion and Hungarian company Filmpartners, Delta is being sold internationally by French-based The Coproduction Office.

Hungarian cinema could also make an impression at this year’s Cannes Festival with Attila Gigor’s thriller The Investigator, a debut feature produced by Ferenc Pusztai (Hungarian Producer on the Move 2007 – see interview) for Hungarian company KMH Film (who were at Cannes Critics’ Week two years ago with Agnes Kocsis’ Fresh air [+see also:

) with co-production support from Sweden’s Anagram Produktion and Ireland’s Fastnet Films. International sales for this title are being handled by Trust Film Sales.
