Market presents new projects by Jancsó, Bogdán, Szász and Kenyeres

While Hungarian film is almost absent from the different selections at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival, save for Belgian director Caroline Strubbe’s Lost Persons Area [+see also:

film profile] (in Critics’ Week), co-produced by Uj Budapest Filmstudio and starring Zoltán Miklós Hajdu, the Hungarian film industry is out in force at the Film Market.

Among the new projects to look out for at the Cannes market, Mythberg Films is launching Ikaros by Árpád Bogdán (who won acclaim at Berlin in 2007 with Happy New Life [+see also:
trailer
film profile]), which is in development. The film traces the misadventures of a young, 18-year-old Hungarian gypsy, who leaves his village in search of a better life. His complicated journey leads him to Budapest before ending in Helsinki.

Mythberg’s line-up also features seasoned director Miklós Jancsó’s historical drama So Much For Justice (Matthias Rex), which is expected to enter production in June; and Bence Miklauzic’s dramatic comedy Children of The Red Dragon (in pre-production), which looks at the tribulations of a Chinese man living in Hungary.

Meanwhile, Titania - Master Pro will unveil three projects in development: Péter Gardos’ Some Amazing Games of Farkas Kempelen’s Chess-Playing Automaton and Tibor Szemzo’s Outsiders, both set to enter production next year; and The Miracle Worker by János Szász (Opium: Diary of a Madwoman), which tells the story of a 10-year-old Jewish boy who performs strange miracles during the Nazi occupation of Budapest (adapated from a novel by Andras Mezei).

Hungaricom will present the market première of Gergely Fonyó’s Made In Hungaria and screen Krisztina Goda’s Chameleon. The company will also sell Gábor Herendi’s comedy A King Of America 2 and Daniel Young’s thriller Pinprick.

There will also be a market screening of Janos Edelenyi’s Prima Primavera [+see also:

film profile] (Eastwest Filmdistribution) and pre-sales will get underway for the project Yesterday by talented director Bálint Kenyeres (whose latest short The History of Aviation will screen in the Directors’ Fortnight), to be produced by Uj Budapest Filmstudio and Denmark’s Zentropa.
