Trouble No More in local cinemas

by

The closing part of a trilogy, Luxembourg director Andy BauschTrouble No More finds a final resting place for Johnny Chicago, an iconic ne’er-do-well and failed criminal that made the late Thierry van Werveke a cult star. Trouble opens in the Grand Duchy tomorrow.

In 1988, Troublemaker introduced audiences to Chicago, a wannabe bank robber who dreams big but who’s hardly competent at his dream job. In 1997, Bausch and Van Werveke revisited the iconic character in Back in Trouble.

Van Werveke died in January 2009, and Bausch went on to shoot the last part of the trilogy in the summer of the same year. The story revolves around Johnny’s brother Ray (Marco Lorenzini) and his friend Chuck Moreno (Ender Frings), both petty criminals. The latter wants to take the ashes of Johnny, who was fatally wounded by the police after a bank heist, to Chicago.

Full of details that will please local audiences and with neat HD cinematography of Luxembourg City by Carlo Thiel, the film is again a very Luxembourg affair. The screenplay, written by the director, is slightly too indulgent and meandering and lacks sympathy for its central protagonists (a quality Van Werveke with which infused all his roles). The closest the film comes to an emotional centre is the always excellent Nicole Max, who again plays Johnny’s wife. She is also the mother of his child, who has joined the police, which complicates matters for Ray and Chuck.

The film was produced by David Grumbach and Paul Thiltges for PTD, in collaboration with Rolf Schmid of Swiss outfit Fama Film. The film was made with backing from the Film Fund Luxembourg. International sales are handled by PTD.

Two other local productions are currently playing in Luxembourg cinemas: Alain Tshinza’s Hamilius, a documentary about the local hip-hop scene, and Just the Three of Us [+see also:

, a French family melodrama starring Emmanuelle Béart and Stefano Accorsi that was co-produced by PTD.
