De Oliveira’s Aniki Bóbó re-released

by

Manoel de Oliveira’s feature debut Aniki Bóbó will get theatrical redistribution this week in the cities of Lisbon and Porto, 68 years after its premiere in 1942. The re-release comes a few days before de Oliveira’s 102nd birthday on December 11.

Locally, Aniki Bóbó is still considered the most emblematic of de Oliveira’s films – despite the international recognition given his prolific body of work of the past 30 years.

The neorealist film depicts the adventures of three children from Porto’s Ribeira neighbourhood. One of them decides to steal a doll for the little girl with whom he is in love.
